Community Music recital features award-winning harp students

Charlene | February 7th, 2012

Three young harp students who study in the West Virginia University Community Arts Program will perform a recital at the Creative Arts Center, Tuesday, Feb. 7.

The program begins at 5 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (200A) and is free and open to the public.

The students are performing pieces in preparation for the Mid-Atlantic Harp Festival Scholarship Competition in McLean, Va., on March 3.

All three will perform works by composer Carlos Salzedo.

Heidi Morey will perform “Chanson dans la Nuit” and “Rumba”; Kariana Ramsey will perform “Tango” and “Rumba”; and Katie Zucker will perform “Greensleeves” and “Rumba.”

Morey won the National American Harp Society Summer Institute Intermediate I Contest last June for performances of Claude Debussy’s “Reverie,” Salzedo’s “Idyllic Poem” and Esteban Benzecry’s “Alwa.”

She received a special award for her performance of “Reverie.” She was an unexpected champion, having never participated in a national competition before.

Ramsey and Zucker are both performing for West Virginia All State Orchestra this year, as they did last year as well.

All three are students of Christine Mazza at WVU.
