Performance-Based Salary Policy

In accordance with University policies, and as a component of the total compensation increase program, the Performance-Based Salary Increase Policy is intended to provide the College of Creative Arts with a methodology motivating employees, supporting the mission of West Virginia University, and recognizing and awarding individual faculty for exceptional and quality performance.

Performance-Based Salary Increases and Promotion and Tenure

  • Any faculty member receiving a promotion in rank will receive a 10% salary increase.
  • Based on the relative quality of a faculty member’s annual performance review, any award of performance-based merit will be independent of any salary increase received due to promotion.
  • In cases where a faculty member applies for promotion but does not receive a favorable recommendation for promotion, the faculty member will be eligible to receive an award of performance-based merit based on the relative quality of the faculty member’s annual review (i.e., in a given review period, a faculty member’s performance may be considered meritorious though not worthy of promotion in rank).

Procedure for Recommendation of Performance-Based Salary Increases

  • Under the current guidelines for the annual review of faculty approved by the University and the College of Creative Arts, each faculty member will be evaluated in the significant areas of the mission—teaching, research/creative activity, and service—to which he or she has been assigned. Based on the faculty member’s letter of appointment and the faculty member’s current Memorandum of Professional Understanding and Responsibilities, any recommendation for a performance-based salary increase will apply proportionally to each assigned area of the mission.
  • Based on the University’s guidelines, College and Division guidelines for determining the quality of performance within each assigned area and using the appropriate qualifiers—excellent, good, satisfactory, and unsatisfactory—each faculty member will receive a recommendation for performance-based salary increases at three separate levels within the College review structure. These levels are:

Level 1: Division Faculty Evaluation, Promotion and Tenure Committee
Level 2: Chair of the Division
Level 3: Office of the Dean
