Flute Audition Requirements

WVU School of Music flute applicants must be prepared to present the following at their audition:

Students may audition online or in-person during any of the formal audition dates or by contacting professor Assimakopoulos to schedule a customized date. Online auditions involve video submission via YouTube links and interview.

Students may opt to take part in an optional pre-screening process. Students wishing to take part in this process should complete their School of Music audition application and contact Professor Assimakopoulos directly with a request for pre-screening.

Audition Repertoire

Undergraduate/Bachelor Degrees (with flute as primary instrument)

Please prepare all major scales over the full range of the instrument ascending and descending; chromatic scale slurred over the full range of the instrument ascending and descending; a minimum of two contrasting works. These can include entire pieces or individual movements from significant concerti or sonatas. One work may be a concert etude composed for the instrument. Piano accompaniment is not necessary.

Masters of Music in Flute Performance

Please prepare three contrasting works, one of which includes at least one movement of major concerto and five orchestral excerpts.

Doctor of Musical Arts in Flute Performance

Please prepare a program totaling 60 minutes in length and containing contrasting works, one of which includes at least one movement of major concerto and five additional orchestral excerpts. Please choose a program that contains both stylistic and technical variety and that represents your strengths.

Artist Diploma

Please prepare a program totaling 60 minutes in length and containing contrasting works, one of which includes at least one movement of major concerto and five additional orchestral excerpts.
